Then you're optimizing your build. Then you're skipping dialogue to hit the next objective. Three sessions later, you've "beaten" the game and feel... weirdly hollow about it.

You're not broken. Your dopamine system is just really, really confused.

The Dopamine Loop You Didn't Know You Were Training

Dopamine gets talked about constantly in gaming circles, usually in the context of loot boxes or achievement pings. But the neuroscience of how dopamine actually functions is more nuanced — and more relevant to how you play — than most coverage suggests.

Here's the simplified version: dopamine isn't primarily the "pleasure" chemical. It's the anticipation chemical. It fires most intensely not when you get a reward, but when you expect one. The gap between wanting and getting is where dopamine lives.

This matters enormously for how games work on your brain. A well-designed quest creates a sustained anticipatory state — you're curious about the story, uncertain about the outcome, exploring possibilities. That extended dopamine engagement is what makes a great RPG feel so absorbing. You're not just chasing rewards; you're marinating in the expectation of them.

Speedrunning and heavy optimization play can short-circuit that loop. When you already know the optimal path, the most efficient build, the fastest route to the ending, you've eliminated most of the anticipatory uncertainty. You're still completing tasks, but the dopamine architecture that makes those tasks feel meaningful has been partially dismantled before you even started.

Metrics Obsession and the Illusion of Achievement

Gaming culture has a complicated relationship with numbers. Time-to-completion, damage per second, achievement percentages, leaderboard rankings — these metrics feel meaningful because they're concrete and comparable. They give you something to point to and say, "I did a thing."

But neuroscientist and author Dr. Andrew Huberman has discussed at length how the brain's reward system responds differently to intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation. When external metrics become the primary goal, they can actually crowd out the internal satisfaction that makes an experience genuinely rewarding.

That last point — about memory — is where the neuroscience gets really interesting.

Memory consolidation, the process by which experiences get encoded into long-term storage, is heavily influenced by emotional engagement and novelty. Experiences that involve genuine surprise, emotional resonance, or sustained curiosity are encoded more deeply than those that are routine or predictable.

A speedrun, by definition, minimizes novelty. You know what's coming. You're executing a known sequence efficiently. From a memory formation standpoint, this is closer to muscle memory than episodic memory — you're training a procedure, not having an experience.

Slow, exploratory play works the opposite way. When you stumble onto an unexpected side quest, get surprised by a narrative twist, or spend twenty minutes just wandering a beautifully designed environment because you're curious about what's around the corner, your brain tags those moments as significant. They get consolidated. They become the stories you tell later.

Dr. Jenna Okafor, a cognitive psychologist who studies how people form memories through interactive media, puts it plainly: "The brain doesn't remember efficiency. It remembers meaning. And meaning tends to emerge from unscripted moments — the things you didn't plan for."

The Speedrunner's Legitimate Defense

Competitive speedrunners are doing something genuinely different — they've typically played a game extensively before optimizing it, which means they already have the full experience encoded. For that community, the dopamine architecture is actually intact — it's just rewired around execution mastery rather than narrative discovery. The anticipation is about whether they'll hit their split times, whether a tricky skip will land, whether they'll set a personal best. That's a legitimate and different kind of engagement.

The problem isn't speedrunning as a discipline. It's the bleeding of speedrunner mentality into first-time, story-driven play — the reflexive impulse to optimize an experience that was designed to be savored.

What Intentional Play Actually Feels Like

The antidote isn't complicated, but it runs against some deeply ingrained gaming habits. It means resisting the guide until you're genuinely stuck. It means letting a side quest pull you off the critical path without guilt. It means sitting in a tavern and reading the background lore even though it doesn't affect your stats.

Santos says he started applying a personal rule after recognizing his optimization habits: no guides for the first full playthrough, no skipping dialogue, no looking up "what's the best build" until after he'd finished the story.

"The first game I played that way in years was Baldur's Gate 3," he says. "I was probably 30% less 'efficient' than I could have been. I also remember almost every hour of it. It's one of my favorite gaming experiences ever."

That's not a coincidence. That's your dopamine system working as intended — sustained, curious, and fully engaged with the world the designers built for you.

The Takeaway for Your Next Quest

None of this means metrics and optimization are evil. Measuring progress is satisfying, and there's real value in mastery-oriented play. But if you've been finishing RPGs and feeling vaguely disappointed, it's worth asking whether you're actually playing the game or just processing it.

Your brain built an incredible capacity for wonder and anticipation. Quest-driven games, at their best, are designed to activate exactly that. The fastest path through a story is almost never the most memorable one.
